about

A first attempt at a UX design challenge I’m calling “Slow Alarms” -

The goal is to design a morning alarm that develops over the course of a few minutes. The snooze function is the current solution for people who don’t wake up right away, and it has its pain points. “Slow Alarms” is an alternative - my aim is to build ebb and flow into a continuous experience.

The technique starts with a single clip of audio that’s loaded into a sampler - in this case, Ableton’s Granulator II. At first, playback speed is slow, creating dark looping figures, and as it develops, samples of the clip at faster playback speeds are layered on top, quicker rhythms, higher pitches… more annoying! And that’s a good thing for alarms. Higher pitches are heard as louder, maybe for two reasons - they’re closer to the usual frequency range of human attention, and also cell phone speakers are small and usually favor those frequencies.

The album art is a picture I took at sunrise on a road trip going south along the Oregon coast, nearby the dunes.
